I grew up in a suburb of Philadelphia, just over the bridge in Gloucester City NJ. I attended school K-12 there. After that, I attended Rowan University, also in NJ.
I’ve always created art, though it wasn’t my full time profession till I was 29 years old. There was a lot of jobs swinging hammers and climbing on roofs, for which I attribute my strong work etchics...they just did not fit me. After I was asked by a shop owner in South Jersey to bring in a portfolio, there was no turning back. I feel comfortable saying that I will be a tattooer until the day I die. I love it more than anything I’ve ever had the privilege to do.
Being a full time artist has allowed me the freedom to donate my time and money to younger generations of artists. I started the S. Martin Jr. Award for Dedication to Art Excellence almost 9 years ago. It is a monetary award given each year to a graduating student of my alma mater, Gloucester City Jr/Sr High School, to one student displaying the undying drive to excel in their chosen artistic medium.
I’ve been working as a tattooer in Key West since 2010. I’ve traveled quite a bit in the last few years to learn as much as I can from other contemporaries in the industry. I am currently licensed in several states around the U.S. and attend tattoo conventions 1-2 times a month.
At 40 years old, life is quite good. I have a healthy relationship with a beautiful woman, a roof over my head and a DREAM job. I feel truly fortunate. I never take it for granted. I’ve never worked harder at anything in my life...Art isn’t just what I do, it is who I am.
